USC Libraries’ Poster Collection Gives “The Duke” Top Billing
Items from the USC Libraries' John Wayne Movie Poster Collection are currently on display inside the Trojan Family Room in the Ronald Tutor Campus Center. Poster Collection Gives ‘The Duke’ Top Billing
While at USC, Marion Morrison was known as a dedicated pre-law student and a 6-foot-4 inch offensive lineman whose football career was cut short by a bodysurfing injury.
The rest of the world soon would know Morrison as John Wayne, the quintessential cinematic cowboy.
Throughout his iconic film career, Wayne often starred as the tough patriot who fought against adversity wherever he found it.
Wayne particularly is remembered for his long association with filmmaker John Ford, who directed The Duke — a moniker given to him as a youth and derived from the name of his trusty Airedale Terrier — in more than 20 westerns, includingStagecoach, The Searchers and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence.
Last year, Wayne’s heirs donated to USC a collection of more than 1,000 movie posters, one-sheets, daybills and lobby cards. The USC Cinematic Arts Library holds the John Wayne Movie Poster Collection on the ground floor of Doheny Memorial Library.
Nearly 24 of Wayne’s movie posters currently are on display on the first floor of the Ronald Tutor Campus Center. The posters feature Wayne as some of his most memorable characters, including Quirt Evans (Angel and the Badman), Captain Nathan Brittles (She Wore a Yellow Ribbon), Davy Crockett (The Alamo) and Rooster Cogburn (True Grit), the role that earned him an Academy Award.
The display in the center’s Trojan Family Room — which features posters and other memorabilia from the USC Cinematic Arts Library, including the hat Wayne wore in Hondo — runs through April 8.
